Understanding Division with Examples
Division follows the exact same sign rules as multiplication. Think of it like this: if you know the multiplication fact, you know the division fact!
Same Signs (Negative ÷ Negative)
(-12) ÷ (-3) = 4
Because 4 × (-3) = -12
Same Signs (Positive ÷ Positive)
(18) ÷ (6) = 3
Because 3 × (6) = 18
Different Signs (Positive ÷ Negative)
(15) ÷ (-5) = -3
Because -3 × (-5) = 15
Different Signs (Negative ÷ Positive)
(-20) ÷ (4) = -5
Because -5 × (4) = -20
