Statistics: Finding the Median Age

1. What is a median?

The median is the middle value in a list of numbers sorted in ascending order. For grouped data, it's the value that divides the data into two equal halves.

2. What is the difference between frequency and cumulative frequency?

Frequency is the number of times a particular value or a value within a class interval occurs. Cumulative Frequency is the running total of the frequencies. The cumulative frequency of the last class is the total number of data points.

3. What is the formula for the median of grouped data?

The formula is: $$ Median = l + \left( \frac{\frac{N}{2} - cf}{f} \right) \times h $$

The Problem

A life insurance agent found the following data for the distribution of ages of 100 policy holders. Calculate the median age, if policies are given only to persons having age 18 years onwards but less than 60 years.
